Towneley is a municipal golf course located on the southern edge of Burnley within easy reach of the M65. It was originally established in 1932 as 9 hole layout, but was later expanded to the current 5834 yard, par 70 course. Set in mature parkland, Towneley is a good test of golf despite its short length.

Over the past 5 years the green keeper Damien Hartley has improved the course to make it a more challenging test of golf. Certain holes on the front nine have been re-numbered to speed up play.  The 3rd now incorporates a pond, which improves the drainage but not the loss of golf balls. A number of ditches have been opened up to improve drainage, and additional bunkers have been put in. As a result of these changes the course is now in very good condition throughout the year.
